Kenapa tepi strap retak, dan apa itu Edging
October 26, 2026

Look closely at the strap or handle of a well-used bag and you will often see the same thing: the thin line of paint along the cut edge has cracked, chipped or started to peel, while the leather beside it still looks fine. Bag edge repair is one of the most common jobs we do, and one of the most satisfying, because such a small detail changes how cared-for the whole bag looks.
Why strap and handle edges crack
When leather is cut, the raw edge is sealed with layers of edge paint. That paint is what gives a strap its smooth, coloured border. It is also the part of the bag that works hardest:
- Bending. Handles and shoulder straps flex every time you pick the bag up, and the paint flexes with them until it splits.
- Friction. Edges rub against clothing, car seats and tables more than any flat surface.
- Hands. Oils and sweat from your hands slowly soften the paint on handles.
- Heat and humidity. In a city like Jakarta, warm, damp air works on the paint between uses.
Once the paint opens up, the raw leather underneath is exposed. Left alone, it can absorb dirt and moisture and start to fray.

How Edging works as a bag edge repair
Edging restores the painted edges of straps and handles when the paint is cracked, peeling or worn. Old, loose paint is taken back, the edge is prepared, and new edge paint is built up in the right colour until the line is smooth and even again.
Edging starts from Rp400.000 and usually takes 2–4 working days. The final price depends on how many edges need work and on the bag’s condition, material and size.

When to book it
The best time for edge work is as soon as you see the first crack. Small cracks are quicker to put right than edges that have frayed. If the rest of the bag has also faded, ask about Recolor, which includes Edging along with cleaning and a full new colour. Not sure which one fits? Our guide to Retouch or Recolor explains the difference.
Keeping edges in good shape
- Hold bags by the body rather than one handle when you can, so the strap does not fold sharply.
- Store bags upright with the handles standing, not folded flat.
- Keep chain straps from rubbing the leather with a Chain Wrap.
Send us a photo of your straps through our free consultation and we will tell you what the edges need before you bring the bag in.
